The Surprising Benefits of Subscribing to a Compostable Diaper Service

It may seem obvious that the main reason most parents subscribe to a compostable diaper service is because they care about the planet. Understandable, considering disposable diapers are the third largest contributor to landfills in the United States. In fact, in the Bay Area alone we put over 300 million diapers in the trash every year. Bad news, considering it takes 500+ years for those diapers to break down in a landfill.* Year over year, those disposable diapers stack on top of each other without degrading. When you start to do the math… it, well it stinks.

REDYPER™ Powered by EarthBaby is doing a small but mighty job to fight all of that landfill waste. Founded in the Bay Area, EarthBaby is the world’s first compostable diaper service. They deliver fresh diapers and pick up soiled ones weekly. They then compost the soiled diapers in a industrial composting facility. Parents and caretakers who subscribe to their services are making such a good environmental impact by avoiding putting used disposable diapers in the trash, and instead diverting them to a commercial composting facility. Every week in the Bay Area, EarthBaby collects and composts over 14 tons of dirty diapers, which are converted into nutrient-rich topsoil in as little as 14 weeks.

These benefits save time, sanity, and most impressively, money. Read on to discover all of the ways REDYPER™ Powered by EarthBaby is changing the diaper-changing game.

1. You never have to worry about running out of diapers (or wipes!)

You already know that a compostable diaper service is in the business of saving Mother Earth. But EarthBaby is also in the business of saving a new parent’s time and sanity. Most caretakers know what it’s like to run out of single use diapers. Whether it’s in the middle of the night or in the middle of a busy week, there is nothing so frustrating as finding yourself at the bottom of a diaper pack with no backups. After one or two night trips to the grocery store to buy an expensive pack of disposable diapers, parents start looking for a better alternative.

With REDYPER™ Powered by EarthBaby, you never have to worry about running out of diapers, because your subscription is set. New diapers and wipes are delivered every week based on how many you order, and you can always adjust your order 48 hours prior to delivery if you need extra products.

Customers of EarthBaby appreciate the fact that they can cross going to the store to buy diapers off their to-do list.

2. You can order high end care products from lotion to laundry soap.

Earth Mama Organics - Baby

When you’re a EarthBaby customer, you can expect to get quality diapers and wipes delivered to your door. But did you know that you can also order other family essentials to be delivered with your baby’s diapers and wipes? EarthBaby works with environmentally friendly brands like:

These brands sell top-notch, eco-friendly and non-toxic products. Members can add their products to their next order to arrive with their diapers and wipes.

3. Delivery Fees are flat, no matter how much you add to your order.

The service fee for delivery, pickup and composting is $33.99 + tax every 4 weeks (not including the cost of diapers and wipes.) That fee covers the delivery of everything you add to your order. For example, on top of their normal diaper order, EarthBaby customers can add:

  1. Two jars of Earth Mama’s organic diaper balm
  2. Five sticks of Earth Mama’s soothing lip balm
  3. Four sticks of Earth Mama’s natural deodorant

All of it would be delivered with their diapers and wipes on the next delivery, without an additional shipping fees. In this example, customers would save over $13 compared to ordering directly from Earth Mama Organics, and they’d get their products sooner.

Earth Mama Organics - Breastfeeding

This also means that it’s a particularly useful service for parents who have multiple children in diapers at the same time. Because you pay a flat fee, you can order as many diapers and fill as many biobags as your household needs while paying the same for delivery and pick-up.

4. Customer Service is excellent.

EarthBaby’s customer service exceeds expectations. Many of their customers are repeat customers, using them again for their second child (and third!) Since 2008, they’ve been a staple in many San Francisco Bay Area communities. EarthBaby is known for their responsiveness and willingness to go above and beyond for their customers. 5. You have access to high quality diapers that withstand blowouts and don’t chafe.

Plant-based diapers have come a long way since they were first invented, and EarthBaby exclusively uses two of the best brands.

Nurture by BioBag manufactures some of the most eco-friendly diapers available. They are soft and ultra-absorbent. Like many disposable diapers, they include a helpful wetness indicator line. Most importantly, they include no harmful chemicals. A 34 pack of size one diapers cost $13.25** through EarthBaby.

DYPER brand diapers are made with viscose fibers from responsibly sourced Bamboo. They are yoga-pants soft ,very absorbent, and have no artificial colors, perfumes, parabens, phthalates or sulfates. They’re delicate on baby’s skin. A 36 pack of extra small diapers costs $13** through EarthBaby.

“I have been a loyal and happy EarthBaby customer since 2015 and used the service for both of my kids. Not only do I feel like I am doing my part to combat the excessive waste diapers create, but from birth my babies had diapers made of material that is totally non toxic. As a result, they rarely had diaper rash – and the diapers stood up to many a blow out, too!”

6. You end up spending about the same amount, but you’re doing good for the planet.

It’s estimated that new parents end up spending an average of $70 on disposable diapers alone every month for a single baby, not including wipes.* With EarthBaby, parents spend around $100 for diapers, wipes and delivery service.

How REDYPER™ Powered by EarthBaby works

When you subscribe to REDYPER™ Powered by EarthBaby, you’ll get plant-based diapers and wipes delivered weekly. As you use them, you’ll collect those poopy diapers and wipes in a compostable bag like BioBags. On your delivery day the following week, a truck will come to pick up the bag of dirty diapers and wipes from the previous week.

From there, the soiled bags are shipped to commercial composting facilities, where they are shredded, mixed with other organic materials and laid out in large Ag Bags to start the composting process.

These bags have air pumped in to them to speed up the composting. As the materials decompose inside the bag, they naturally heat up (up to 150 degrees, notice the steam coming off of the tops.) Bacteria is destroyed in the heat. This process takes as little as 14 weeks.

After the 14 weeks of steaming and composting in the Ag Bags, the materials are taken out of the bags and mixed. They are then put into large curing piles to further dry out. When they’re dry, the once-diapers and wipes are broken down and bacteria free. They’re ready to be used as nutrient rich topsoil. The topsoil created here is not yet approved for agricultural purposes but is used for landscaping, reforestation, and roadside projects.

REDYPER™ is expanding through America! Your area might be covered, many metropolitan areas are, take a look here:

Can I buy compostable diapers and then compost diapers in a home compost pile or in a home composter?

Unfortunately, no. It is dangerous to compost human waste on your own. Diaper compost must be heated significantly in order to destroy harmful bacteria.

Can I put compostable diapers in the green bin or compost bin?

No. It is illegal to put human waste in the compost bin. Due to the harmful bacteria in human waste, diaper compost must be handled specifically and carefully.
